Song Review: Rescene – UhUh

Rescene - UhUhNewly-debuting girl group Rescene are apparently fans of the two-syllable onomatopoeia song title. After delivering pre-release YoYo late last month, they’re back with their official debut UhUh. Neither of these titles inspire much confidence, but the songs have been stronger than those sound effects suggest. Though UhUh is a mixed bag, its highlights outweigh its missteps.

UhUh is at its best when it throws everything at us at once. Its chorus is split into several sections. The first hinges on that “uh uh” effect we were promised, but the next segment brings in brassy synths for a heartier arrangement that acts as a resounding highlight. I wish the entire track had been built on this robust energy.

The good news is that, even when we’re drowning in “uh uh uh” territory, the instrumental’s rough textures and swinging beat keep things aloft. I could do without the chants in the pre-chorus, but the verses have a nice blend of melody and attitude. The song finishes with aplomb, delivering a satisfying, layered climax that will have you coming back for more. And at nearly three and a half minutes, UhUh is given ample time to grow and feels like a fully fleshed out idea. As debuts go, it’s a promising first step with plenty of room to develop from here.

  1. I like the production! That bassline or whatever is going on throughout the song drives the song a lot! I was expecting you to give it a 9 or even a 10 for the production, but looks like my intuition is never correct 😅

But I like it. It’s lively and as you said, the melody and attitude blends well in the song.

8.5 (8, 9, 9, 8) for now, but it will age well for me 🙃

    • i definitely have moments where I think I know Nick’s thoughts immediately while listening to a track. I knew he wasn’t gonna vibe with the chants 😂

      • I mean, chants have basically been a pet peeve for him and I don’t blame him since either chants can be catchy or they’re annoying as hell. Otherwise, it’s fun guessing what ratings he’d give a song and I admit there are moments I somehow guessed the ranges correctly (like “8s” or “mid-to-high 7s”) ̄_(ツ)_/ ̄

  2. Like other said, the production is amazing and the girls sound good. I like how there’s some flair to their singing style, more r&b-ish rather than pop. We need more full energy and full landscapes, spring is here.

I’ve been waiting for a girl group release to really impress me and this is the first of the year. At least the first to go a playlist rather than just a liked song on spotify.

  3. with as many kpop songs that rely on, and promote themselves on, i am surprised, Nick, that you have not just accepted this trend….i really like this debut by Rescene….they don’t use the “Uhuh” chant like many other groups drown in their chants, and the song has a nice, smooth beat and tone to it….and, i am pleasantly surprised by their strong vocals….very good debut….i will definitely be looking for more from Rescene….

  4. “Neither of these titles inspire much confidence”

Exactly, I just wondering why so much song right now are using this type of speaking word as a title and it does lower down my confidence on my first listen as I already labelled the song probably repeating the title name in chorus again and again.

However I do like the production for this song, a solid 10 on instrument and production. The post-chorus is so good to listen on, the vocal, the instrument has blend very well and I am totally in love with this section!

So far I’ve already lower down my standard till that a song with 3 minute plus is already a gift to me. Comes with a long lost bridge in todays’ k-pop, bringing and building the energy back to the final chorus is a great journey on me. But I really wish they could extend the final chorus with a proper outro, or dance break, or a refrain if possible to bring more upbeat energy toward the end.
